Cost of foldable phones will limit uptake: Juniper Research

Juniper Research believes that the cost of new folding phones will be prohibitive for most people in 2019 and 2020. The Samsung Galaxy Fold costs around $ 2,000, and the Huawei Mate X costs around $ 2,600. “If technology is going to become common, then it is imperative that these prices fall within three years or risk becoming a ‘flash in the pan’, such as 3D TV and HD DVD,” says the report. of Juniper “Intelligent connectivity, 5G and the IoT: the best of MWC 2019.”

Folding smartphones were one of the dominant themes at MWC Barcelona because it’s a career, said William Ho, founder and principal analyst at 556 Ventures, in a previous interview with FierceWireless. But Ho said the high prices and unproven utility of this new subset of phones could limit its use.

Juniper Research said that the cultivation of new use cases, including media viewing and transmission through larger screens, would increase the value of these devices. “This will be done through the support of the operating system and the development of mobile applications for specific folding phones,” according to Juniper.

HTC 5G Hub
Before MWC 2019, Sprint and HTC launched the launch of a 5G mobile smart concentrator. HTC unveiled its 5G Hub at the Mobile World Congress, which it plans to launch in the second quarter of 2019. The device acts as a fixed wireless access router (FWA) 5G and a home center. It runs on the mobile operating system Android 9 Pie, allowing the installation of other applications on the device. And it allows the connection of up to 20 devices through Wi-Fi.

“While a series of 5G FWA devices have been announced, HTC’s 5G Hub is the most complete consumer device,” says Juniper Research.

At MWC 2019, Sprint said the HTC 5G Hub allows 4K video streaming and mobile games that serve up to 20 users as a 5G mobile hotspot.
